Technical SEO in 2026 — why Core Web Vitals matter more than ever
An engineering guide to the relationship between perceived performance, ranking and revenue. Data, benchmarks and concrete actions.
Performance is SEO
Google has integrated Core Web Vitals into ranking since 2021. Five years later, the evidence is clear: LCP, INP and CLS aren't "bonus factors", they're fundamentals of a UX that converts. A slow site loses organic traffic, drop-off rises, conversion rate falls.
The three numbers that matter
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) under 2.5s, INP (Interaction to Next Paint) under 200ms, CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) under 0.1. These thresholds are measured at the 75th percentile on real users, not in the lab.
How to get there
The path is engineering-driven: server response under 200ms, images with next/image and modern formats (AVIF, WebP), minimal JavaScript in the critical path, fonts with font-display: swap and targeted preloads, stable layout with explicit media dimensions.
Measure honestly
PageSpeed Insights alone isn't enough. You need CrUX (real Google data), production RUM monitoring, and a performance budget verified in CI. What you don't measure, you don't control.
